March OT Tip of the Month {Visual Schedules}

$

Hi friends!

My primary reason for starting this blog almost two years ago was for collaboration. And collaboration I have done! Whether it be questions from parents, planning for inclusion therapy with teachers, learning and sharing ideas with other SLPs, or asking questions to SLPs, OTs and PTs, the last 2 years have been invaluable to me as an SLP! I cannot stress this enough: collaboration and close working relationships with parents and other professionals is paramount to student success! I'm very blessed to have an amazing team of individuals who work very closely together. We are constantly discussing kiddos, brainstorming new ideas, sharing updates with each other, and reinforcing each others' goals in our own sessions!

One of the OTs in my school puts out an "OT Tip of the Month" every month for teachers and service providers. I asked her permission to share these tips on my blog, as they are great ideas for teachers, SLPs, OTs, parents, and others! Here's her March Tip of the Month below with a picture example:

This time of the year one of the frustrations I hear often repeated is…
“ We have been in school since August, they should know the morning routine. I have to keep telling them what to do!”

If this sounds familiar, I may have a solution…an individual laminated visual schedule that has the steps to complete the morning routine numbered in order. As the student completes each step they can check it off with a dry erase marker. I like to make these narrow in width so they can be laminated and attached with Velcro to the side of the desk. This serves 3 purposes: 1)  it doesn’t get lost in the desk; 2)they have quick access to it and 3) it is out of the way when they aren’t using it.

You may wonder why this is necessary…”why can’t they just remember the routine and what I tell them??” The reason is that many students struggle with the auditory processing of verbal information, have difficulty with recall and short term memory, or have decreased attention and focus. Using a strategy such as a written list of steps to complete can make all the difference in the world and help make your student more independent, complete work in a more timely manner, and decrease disruptions to the class!

Have a nice day!
Michele L. Frommer, OTR/L

For younger students or non-readers, use visuals to reinforce a schedule! Thanks so much for sharing your tip, Michele! Do you guys use visual schedules with your students?

Hi Everyone!

I don't know about you all, but I'm ferociously trying to catch up lately! I finally get my to-do list down to a manageable amount of tasks, and then I think of 14 new ideas of things that I "need" to do! At least with this blog post, I'm crossing off three at once! Each of these three new products are things I've been wanting to do for a while. I'm so excited to show them to you now!

The first new product is Conjunction Junction:

This product has been so nice to use with my students recently! It comes with a poster explaining conjunction and transition words and the importance of using them in retell and writing!

It also includes 32 conjunction/connector/transition word cards, and 4 blank cards to add additional words of your own!

I printed these and laminated them. I've used them in so many different ways to reinforce these words in story retell and writing!

The second new product is Sequence It!

This product includes visual card sets with words for 8 different sequencing sets. Additional sequences will be added as clipart becomes available!

Finally, the BIG DEAL! I've had several buyers request specific items be bundled together in my store. Since I can't possibly make a bundle for all of the possible product groupings, I created Bundle It! Book Companions. By buying this product, you can choose 4 book companions to bundle together at the price of 3---A 25% discount! All you have to do is make the purchase and email me your choices and username, and I'll email you your downloads ASAP! Stay tuned for Bundle It! options for other products besides book companions as well!

You can find Bundle It! Book Companions HERE:

The Weekly Wrap-Up!

Hi Friends!

I'll admit upfront...this weekly wrap-up is MUCH shorter than last week's...because I spent A LOT of time this week in eligibility meetings (hey, it's job security, right?!?!) Anyway, take a look at what we were up to this week:

Of course, we had to start the week celebrating Saint Patrick's Day!

My younger students used Simply Speech's Old Lady Swallowed a Clover book companion to work on 'wh' questions and sequencing!

My older students used my History of Saint Patrick's Day companion to learn the history of the holiday and work on comprehension questions and holiday vocabulary!

Other groups used my Lucky Tucker book companion to work on sequencing, 'wh' questions, and writing!

Now for a few personal pictures:

Halle Jane spent her first day at the beach. Just so you know, she is not asleep here. She rather enjoys placing things over her head, including but not limited to, blankets, stuffed animals, clothes, and apparently hats. She really enjoyed "laying out", soaking up some rays (she was coated in sunscreen), and relaxing!

Finally, as earlier stated, I spent a lot of time in meetings this week, getting ready for meetings after Spring Break, and writing eval/reeval reports. Unfortunately, I don't "just get to play with kids all day," as my husband likes to tease me about!

AND...I ended the week attending a training on Common Core for Florida!

Now, we're off to GA for a week for Spring Break! I can't wait to sleep in (yeah right with the baby), enjoy being outside, and catch up on making TPT products. April's Book Club Bundle is coming soon!

Have a great weekend!

iName It! {An App Review and Giveaway}

Happy Wednesday, friends!

I hope you all are having a great week! I'm super busy trying to catch up on my "to-do" list!

I'm back today with another great app from Smarty Ears. iName it was created by an SLP to target adults with Aphasia. However, just like all of the Smarty Ears apps, this one can be used for multiple targets across all settings and ages!

Disclaimer: Smarty Ears provided me a copy of this app for review, but all opinions expressed below are mine alone. No other compensation was provided.

This app is available in three different languages. While most of my kiddos speak only English, I do have several students who also speak Spanish. So having the different options is neat!

As with all Smarty Ears apps, support and tutorials are provided should you ever need any help. I've had to utilize their support system before, and they were great about helping me out!

Users are very easy to add. You can import a real picture or choose from the app's Avatars. This app is only designed for one user at a time.

This app targets expressive naming of objects in rooms around the house. There are five different rooms to choose from.
When you choose a room, the room lights up. The target objects are shown on the bottom of the screen.

When you touch an object, the rest of the room goes gray and the object itself lights up. If the person names the item correctly, you simply touch "Got it."

Four different cueing options are also provided if the person is having difficulty. The first is represented by a pencil and gives the first sound of the target word.

The second cue is represented by a book, and gives the definition of the target word.

The third cue is represented by a rectangle. This cue provides a fill-in-the-blank sentence option.

The last cue is represented by a word bubble with phonetic spelling. This cue gives the person the complete target word.

Keeping data with this app is very easy! I love how the results are broken down into accuracy with and without cues, and tells you which cues the person was most successful with. This is great when identifying which type of cueing is most helpful to the person!

Overall, this is another wonderful app by Smarty Ears. I love that it is simple and easy to use, and the data collection is great. I also love how the graphics are realistic and targeted towards older students/patients. (Sometimes I don't use certain apps with older patients because the graphics are too child-like.) I also believe this app could be easily used with other targets as well (wh questions, object function, identifying receptively, categories, life-skills, vocabulary, and even speech!

iName it sells in the iTunes app store for $14.99. You can find it by clicking the link below:

Or, you can enter to win a copy of the app below:

Good luck, and have a great day!

April OT Tip of the Month {Just Right Desk}

Happy Wednesday!

Here's the April OT Tip of the Month. This one is on teaching student to keep their desks and work organized!

One of the most frequent complaints I hear from teachers is  “ their desk is a mess!”

One of the most frequent things I hear students say when asked to locate an item in their desk is  “ I don’t know where it is.”

What do these 2 statements have in common? They are both the product of having too many items to manage and not enough space in the desk to neatly arrange them. In addition, for students who struggle with organizational skills and visual memory, cleaning out their desk and expecting them to remember just sometimes isn’t enough help.

A couple of my favorite recommendations that I have seen implemented this school year are a classroom depot where all crayons, glue sticks, scissors, markers, rulers, and reading guides are kept, as well as  a plastic tote that is placed on the floor next to the students desk.  Not only are these great ways to decrease desk clutter, they both provide a much needed movement break when a student goes to gather their items.

A great strategy to increase students self- awareness and responsibility in maintaining an organized and neat desk space is to use a visual support which I call the “Just Right Desk.”  Students love taking pictures,  so I begin by having them take a picture of their desk. This will be the “before” picture. After organizing the desk space with the student, I have the student take another picture of the finished product.  This is the “after picture.” It is very important to do this with the student for 2 reasons. First, if they are part of the process they will be invested in maintaining the final product. Second,  they will be able to provide feedback as to how efficient it is to access the materials and what preferences they may have.  I then have the student look at the 2 pictures and determine which picture looks more organized and easier to find items in. The pictures are a great tool in assisting students in recognizing the difference and when they state the “after” picture is the neater and more organized of the 2 desks,  I refer to that desk as  the “Just Right Desk.” I then laminate the picture and either secure it to the side of the desk, or in a place in the classroom where it can be easily obtained such as on a side of a magnetic file cabinet or the white board with magnetic tape or a magnetic clip. The visual is then used to assist the student in maintaining a neat desk area as they can look at their desk and compare it to the picture. If they do not look the same, they can refer to the picture and organize it so they match.

The feedback I have received from students has been that the picture really helps! Classroom  teachers have also shared that not only are students are taking pride in maintaining a neat desk space, they are able to locate items much faster. So, if your objective is to assist your student in improving organizational skills as well as maintain a neater desk space, give the “Just Right Desk” a try!

Hi Friends!

I've gotta warn you up front...I'm WAY behind on blogging about new products. I try really hard to make my blog posts a mixture of topics, and not only blog about new products in my TPT store. So, I'm apologizing in advance for what's to come over the next few days. But I promise to intertwine the product posts with what we're up to in speech, and a new developmental milestone post that's coming soon, too!

Over the past week, I've been busy creating FOUR new Holiday History packets for Easter Symbols, Easter: The Resurrection, Cinco de Mayo, and Veterans/Memorial/Patriot/Armed Forces Days. I LOVE teaching my students about the history behind the holidays. I think it's important that they know where the holidays come from and vocabulary associated with each holiday. Plus, each packet has activities for comprehension, writing, reinforcement, speech, and much more!

You can download the Holiday History packets individually in my TPT store (there are currently 14!), or you can download them all at once in my money-saving Holiday History Mega Bundle! This set bundles all of the products together for a 30% discount. Plus, if you buy it now, you'll get all of the added holidays later for FREE!

The Weekly Wrap-Up!

Hi Friends!

I'm literally hours away from the weekend....and I'm sooo excited! Though I have a lot of work to do at home this weekend, I'm also going to take some time to relax on the beach (weather permitting), and spend some time with family!

Anyway, I haven't done a Weekly Wrap-Up in a few weeks, as our scheduled have been a little off with State testing among other things. So this is what we've been up to the past few weeks in therapy:

I have a little Kindergarten speech kid who is infatuated with any type of vehicle. He doesn't like to practice his speech sounds at home, so we made him a place-mat to keep with his words, so he can practice them before dinner. Mom reports it's working so far!

I have one student in particular who is having a very hard time with playing games with peers. He attends one of my social groups. He used to loathe Apples to Apples card edition until we introduced Apples to Apples dice edition. Now he loathes the dice, and asks to play the card version. However, the other students in the group are enjoying the dice game, so we're using this as a teachable moment to teach the importance of compromise, talking out solutions instead of tantruming, winning and losing graciously, etc. Some days are good, others not so much. But he'll get there eventually. Until then, we keep on playing....

Before we play a game (always an educational one, might I add), we review the acceptable and unacceptable ways to win and lose. You can find these in my TPT store HERE.

I spent some time this week planning for Summer suggestions, too. I used this homework calendar from Sublime Speech last year and my parents loved it! You can find a very similar one she made HERE.

I also spent time this week doing a few screenings on Kindergarten students. I used Speechy Musing's Kindergarten Screener from her HUGE CCSS Reference Binder for the first time, and LOVED it! You can find her awesome packet HERE.

We used Speech Time Fun's Noun/Verb Agreement activity on the iPad for a wonderful no-print option! You can find this cute and quick FREEBIE HERE.

I tried to use the iPad as much as possible this week and last, as the majority of the school was in "Quiet Zones" because of State testing. I often saw my kiddos right outside of their classrooms instead of bringing them all the way back to my room for speech. Teach Speech 365's adorable no-print book, Carl's Crazy Day was perfect for reading comprehension! (And my students ADORED it!) You can find it HERE.

And since baseball is in full-swing around here (Go Rays! and Braves!), we used The Speech Bubble's Baseball Listening Comprehension cards on the iPad as well! You can find this activity HERE.

For the majority of my language groups, we read the story The Day Jimmy's Boa Ate the Wash and used my new companion packet to target all kinds of skills such as basic concepts, comprehension questions, sequencing, writing, prepositions, cause/effect, and much more! You can find this companion packet HERE.

In one of my kindergarten speech groups, we worked on the /sh/ sound. I have one working on the initial position and another working on the final position. These FREE worksheets by Talking With Rebecca were great to target both sounds at the same time! You can fine these HERE. (P.S. Please tell me that you, too, have one of those students who insists on coloring everything in rainbow colors, so that it takes forever and he/she never finishes!)

And finally, I took a few of my kiddos on nature walks in celebration of Earth Day. We talked about our 5 senses, vocabulary of things we saw and heard, and then came back to make adorable nature walk books by The Dabbling Speechie. You can find this adorable book HERE. We talked about the importance of taking care of our Earth as we made the books for them to take home. Though I did not tell the kid, this one was definitely my favorite:

In case you can't read it, then sentences go like this. His answers are in red. Don't you just love it when you feel as if your lessons make a difference?!?!?!

I went on a nature walk.
I saw ___ grass
I found ____ a stick.
I felt ______ hot.
I discovered _______ I don't like nature walks. (The End.)

Have a great weekend, friends!

Happy Cinco de Mayo, Amigos!

We had a very big weekend at my house...We had a birthday party to go to for one of Halle Jane's BFFs...HJ decided to (finally) start crawling, she stood on her own, she decided to (finally) say MAMA, and she decided to stop calling her daddy "Dada" and start calling him just "DAD." Plus, we spent a large portion of the beautiful weekend in the pool (see picture below!)

So thanks to all of the fun stuff, I didn't crack open my computer once. And sometimes that's just ok. But anyway, I'm back today to let you know that I finished the book companions for my MAY Book Club. Here's the newest addition, Princess Pigtoria and the Pea, by Pamela Duncan. Happy To Be An SLP Blog Hop!

Happy Monday, Friends!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! If you haven't yet heard, May is Better Speech & Hearing Month! I'm sooooo excited to be a part of this awesome blog hop, where many of your favorite Speech Bloggers are giving information about our field. AND....there's great prizes and a really cool surprise at the end, so make sure to "hop" all the way through!

Anyway, as many of you know, I had my first baby, a little girl named Halle Jane, back in August. It has been so much fun watching her grow and learn and begin to talk! She's 8 1/2 months old, and she's got quite the vocabulary going on! This weekend I took the time to write down the words/phrases she is currently saying consistently and in context:

  • Dad (No, she doesn't call him Dada, just "dad." And I have no idea where that came from!
  • Mama
  • Uh-oh
  • Hey
  • Bye-Bye
  • Duck
  • Doggie
  • Kitty Cat
  • No-No
  • Whassat (What's that?)
  • Thank you
  • What?
  • Baba (ball/bottle)

So now that I'm done bragging about my kid, here's my tip:

NOT ALL KIDS DO THE SAME THINGS AT THE SAME TIME.....AND THAT'S OK!

As mothers, it is easy to constantly compare your children to others. The American Speech & Hearing Association has guidelines for normal language development, but if your kiddo isn't meeting them exactly by a certain point, it doesn't necessarily mean they are behind and there is something wrong. Although my little girl is talking early, she hasn't started crawling yet, and again, that's ok!

Try to keep in mind that the normal language development guidelines are just that....guidelines. And chances are, your little one will start talking your ear off in no time!  However, if your child doesn't progress or you become concerned about your child's development, it is always a good idea to ask your pediatrician. And many SLPs will offer free screenings as well!

Following is a very brief synopsis of typical language development:

4-6 months: Begins babbling sounds and laughing
7 months- 1 year: Babbles in long and short groups of sounds; imitates speech sounds; and may have 1-2 words
1-2 years: Uses 2 word questions (Where mama?); puts two words together (Want ball)
2-3 years: Has a word for almost everything; strings together 2-3 word phrases

For additional information on typical language development, visit ASHA's website

It's Thursday! And that means there's just one more day til Friday!

I know some of you lucky ones are wrapping up the last 2 weeks of school. I will be seeing kiddos through the first week of June, and then private kiddos over the summer. And I know some of you very unlucky ones are seeing kiddos later into June due to weather make up days. So I've been working on a few activities to get those of us who will still be seeing kiddos through the summer months.

I am loving using the Little Critter books for therapy. They are adorable, funny, and at a great level for many of my students. This book is very similar to my recent book companion, Happy Mother's Day, by Mercer Mayer. You can see highlights from the Happy Father's Day companion below:

Sequencing Cards from the Story are included for story retell!

Comprehension Question cards are included-with and without picture answer choices!

Basic Concept Cards are included for basic concept practice!

Several character description worksheets are included like this one!

Several Venn Diagrams are also included!

A following directions worksheet is included as well!

With this worksheet, your students can fill in the blanks about their dad and take it home as a great gift!

A game board is included as well for reinforcement and fun!

AND MUCH, MUCH MORE!

You can find it in my TPT store here:

Happy Monday, friends!

Did you know that this past Tuesday was National Frog Hopping Day? Because of this amazing fact, we went a little froggy in the speech room this week! Check out what we did below, with the help of a few products from some fellow Speechies!

We used the book From Tadpole to Frog, by Wendy Pfeffer, along with my book companion to target all kinds of concepts including comprehension questions, sequencing, describing, comparing and contrasting, writing, and more! We also used this FREE vocabulary worksheet by Natalie Synders to make dictionaries for the new vocabulary words we learned!

You can find my companion packet for From Tadpole to Frog by clicking the link below:

You can find Natalie's FREE My Personal Dictionary Activity by clicking the link below:

In keeping with the frog theme, we also used The Speech Umbrella's Fluency Frog Packet in my fluency group. I love this comprehensive packet, and my kids went "froggy" over it too!

You can find The Speech Umbrella's Fluency Frog packet by clicking the link below:

And finally, we got away from the frog theme to do a little contraction practice with flip flops from The Speech Ladies! You can find the FREE Contraction Flip Flops Activity by clicking the link below:

Thanks so much for "hopping" by! Have a great week!

Happy Sunday, Friends!

It's been WAAAAYYY too long! BUT....I have a good explanation. Make that several good explanations!

On June 17th, just a week after our school year was finished, my husband and I loaded up the largest U-Haul we could find and moved back to our hometown in South GA. This decision was a much harder one than I ever could have expected. Both sets of our parents are in GA, all our siblings, and my grandparents and other extended family. But leaving Saint Petersburg wasn't a decision we took lightly. By making the decision to move back to GA, we were gaining immediate access to our parents among other things, but we were also leaving other family and the best friends in the world behind.

When my husband and I decided to move away from our hometown almost 4 years ago and settled in Saint Petersburg, we were taking a huge leap of faith. We had some family in Tampa, but we knew no one else. But The Lord blessed our time there beyond measure. He put me in what I honestly believe is the best elementary school in Saint Petersburg. And with the best school came the best group of co-workers and students' families, who quickly became the best group of friends. My husband's co-workers also became great friends. We got married, became pregnant, and had our little girl all while living in St. Pete. We loved the shopping, the beaches, the plethora of restaurants, the museums, the theme parks, and most of all, the people. Our time in Florida is something we will treasure forever. But sometimes, new opportunities present themselves, and you feel the calling to take another leap of faith. And this is exactly what happened for us a few months before school was out. I had an opportunity to take a new job in a hospital setting in our hometown, and my husband quickly received a job offer as well. And with a little girl less than a year old, we felt the desire to bring her home so that she could grow up around her grandparents as we did around ours.

So the difficult decision was made. We decided to trust The Lord to lead us home, and we will continue to seek his guidance in how long we stay. It may be forever. It may not. We may find our way back to Florida one day, or we may just enjoy frequent vacations there instead. But no matter where we are, our Florida friends and family are forever in our hearts!

So in addition to the out-of-state relocation and new jobs, we also began building a house. Until the house is finished, we're currently living in a family cabin on the out-skirts of town (ok, waaaayyy out in the country). While it's an awesome (and free!) place to stay, it unfortunately doesn't have internet. So needless to say, blogging and making TPT materials hasn't been the easiest thing to do these days!

The Beginnings of Our New House!

But even though I'm having to be very intentional right now about finding time to blog, I promise I'll be back in full swing soon enough. Our house will be ready soon, and although unpacking will take some time, I'll be back on a regular basis very soon!

Hope you all are having a wonderful summer, and have a great start to the new school year! And if you don't already, you can follow me on Teachers Pay Teachers (Whitneyslp), to receive email notifications about new products that I'll be adding in the next few weeks (just in case I don't have time to blog about them all!)
